North Carolina's Caroline Baldwin has been named the ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week for October 22-28, 2017. For the men, Tar Heel Valdas Abaliksta has been selected as the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week for the period from October 22-28, 2017.
This marks the first award in the careers fro both Baldwin and Abaliksta. Baldwin is a senior from Westfield, N.J. and Abaliksta is a freshman from Miglovaros, Lithuainia.
Caroline Baldwin provided crucial points in leading North Carolina to a 159-141 win over #22 South Carolina in dual meet action. She led off the winning 200-yard medley relay with the fastest 50-yard backstroke split (27.89) by almost a full second as UNC won in 1:40.45 compared to USC's 1:42.08. She also led off the 400-yard freestyle relay that took first place, being the only one of 24 swimmers in the relay to split under 50 seconds as she went 49.09 seconds. UNC outscored the Gamecocks 24-10 in the two relays. She also won two individual events, both in NCAA B times. She won the 100-yard backstroke in 53.28 and the 100-yard freestyle in 49.07. Baldwin's time in the 100-yard backstroke matches the 10th fastest time in the country this year in NCAA Division I.
Freshman Valdas Abaliksta won one individual evnt, finished second in another and swam on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay in UNC's dual meet against South Carolina. Abaliksta won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 54.34, making him the ninth fastest individual in the event in NCAA Division I during the 2017-18 season. His time also makes him the seventh fastest Tar Heel performer in history in the event.
Abaliksta finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke, being touched out by just .05 of a second. His time of 1:58.54 makes him the 10th fastest Tar Heel performer in UNC history in the event. His time was the sixth fastest time in the country this year in NCAA Division I.
Abaliksta also had the fastest split of all 24 swimmers in the 400-yard freestyle relay, going 44.30 as the Tar Heels won the event in 3:00.09, edging out South Carolina's top relay by .54 of a second.
