Tar Heels Wrap Up Day One at Georgia Tech
November 15, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
ATLANTA, Ga. - Carolina swimming and diving wrapped up the first day of competition at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Thursday. Heading into day two, the Tar Heel women rank seventh against 10 teams with a total 160 points and the men eighth against nine with 116 points in the opening day events.
A number of Carolina student-athletes made impressive contributions to their team scores. Adding 46 points to the women's score, the Tar Heel 200 free 'A' relay scored a second-place finish and an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 1:29.21. Led off by senior captain Zhada Fields, the rest of the relay consisted of the three women who would go on to light up the competition in the 50 free final later in the evening — senior Kate Boyer, junior Brooke Bauer and freshman Grace Countie. Though the women's 'B' relay (Sophie Lindner, Maddie Smith, Caroline Hauder and Heidi Lowe) did not add any points to Carolina's total, their time of 1:30.96 was the sixth fastest of the night, a very promising sign for the team's upcoming season.
In the women's 50 free, Grace Countie swam 22.44 for second-place accolades, an NCAA 'B' cut and the eighth spot in the UNC record books. Brooke Bauer took seventh with her final 'B' qualifying time of 22.67 and Kate Boyer's time of 22.93 earned her another NCAA 'B' cut time and 10th place in the final after she swam a personal best 22.69 in the morning prelims. Sophomore Maddie Smith also tacked on some points for the Tar Heels as she clocked 23.09 in the 50 free 'B' final and rounded out the Tar Heels' 61 points in the event.
On the boards, Carolina made an appearance in both the men's one-meter and the women's three-meter finals. Bouncing back from a late summer injury, redshirt senior Sean Burston jumped six spots in the final to earn the one-meter runner-up title with a season-best final score of 346.50 points. Freshman Emily Grund continued her hot streak and snagged another top finish for Carolina, claiming sixth in the three-meter with 320.90 points.
Carolina's men's 200 free and 400 medley 'A' relays earned seventh- and eighth-place finishes, respectively, with sophomore Alvin Jiang leading off both. A young 200 free relay of two sophomores and two freshmen pushed past Auburn's 'A' relay by one one-hundredth of a second. Jiang, freshman Tucker Burhans, sophomore Eli Coan and freshman Tomas Sungaila finished the event in 1:20.44. Jiang also clocked a season-best 100 back time of 46.64 to help the 400 medley relay swim 3:14.46 as freshman Sterling Smith, senior Nick Loomis and junior captain Greg Brocato solidified the finish.
Sophomore Caroline Hauder earned herself an NCAA qualifying time of 1:59.48 for seventh place in the 200 IM 'A' final after finishing her prelim heat with a season-best time of 1:58.45.
Other notable performances included Bryanna Cameron and Robyn Dryer's 15th- and 17th-place finishes in the women's 500 free as they clocked 4:47.84 and 4:47.90. Sophomore Dimitrios Dimitriou also contributed to the team score after his 500 free final time of 4:26.02 earned him 16th-place honors and Alvin Jiang swam a season-best 50 free of 20.19 to top the Carolina depth chart.
