March 15, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
Action continues Friday at Ohio State University.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - For the second straight year, University of North Carolina senior captain Caroline Baldwin has earned first-team All-America honors in the 50-yard freestyle as the second day of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships concluded at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion at Ohio State University.
The Tar Heels are in 18th place in the team competition after the second day of events with 25 points.
Baldwin, who a year ago took seventh in the 50-yard freestyle, placed eighth Thursday night in a time of 22.01 seconds after qualifying in sixth in the preliminaries in a time of 21.80.
"We are so proud of Caroline Baldwin earning first-team All-America honors in the 50-yard freestyle," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "It was a great field and very tight at the finish. Like many of the women here, she had five swims today and handled herself superbly."
Carolina also earned points in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the Tar Heels moved up four spots between preliminaries and finals to finish in 10th place with a time of 1:28.22, the squad's season best time. The UNC relay included Caroline Baldwin at 21.74, Caroline Hauder at 22.14, Maddie Smith at 22.33 and Zhada Fields at 22.01.
"It was great to see our women earn several finals swims this morning," said DeSelm. "Tonight our 200-yard freestyle relay moved up four places and dropped .32 to take 10th place in the event. Caroline had a great lead off, two freshmen went next with both Caroline Hauder and Maddie Smith splitting well and anchor Zhada Fields split her lifetime best and she almost got the touch to win consolations."
"We're looking forward to competing tomorrow and adding diver Maria Lohman into the competition," DeSelm finished.
