Grund & Stepinski Qualify For NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. — North Carolina sophomore Emily Grund and freshman Fabian Stepinski have qualified for the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship. A native of Keller, Texas, Grund placed seventh in the one-meter diving event at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on Monday to reach the NCAA finals for the second year in a row.
Grund, who was fourth after the preliminary rounds, secured the NCAA bid with a score of 569.65. The top seven scores in the finals advance to the 2020 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships that will take place March 18-21 in Athens, Ga.
Stepinski, who was 14th after the preliminary dives, improved four places to a 10th place showing with a total score of 712.25. The Switzerland native will advance to the men's championship in Indianapolis, Ind.
Freshman Paige Burrell also reached today's opening day finals and finished 15th with a score of 533.35.
Junior Taylor Hockenberry was 33rd after the preliminary rounds.
Senior Andrew Owsiany and freshmen Alex Hart also competed on Monday in the men's three-meter event. Hart and Owsiany finished 19th and 25th, respectively, in the preliminary rounds.
All six Tar Heels will be in action on Tuesday in day two of the Zone B Championships from Athens.
