Swim & Dive Drops Home-Opener To NC State

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina swimming and diving team fell to North Carolina State University in its home-opener at Koury Natatorium on Wednesday night. Despite numerous close finishes, the Wolfpack defeated UNC, 220-178, on the women's side and 231.50-169.50 on the men's side.
The Tar Heel men and women's records fell to 1-1 after defeating Queens University in their season-opener on October 1st.
Valdas Abaliksta had a significant showing on the men's side, picking up three first place finishes throughout the meet. Abaliksta won the 50 Yard Breaststroke, 100 Yard Breaststroke, and 150 Yard Breaststroke to complete a clean sweep of Breaststroke events on the evening.
Other highlights for UNC's men included Boyd Poelke and Dylan Citta. Poelke was able to pick up second place finishes in the 50 Yard Butterfly and 100 Yard Butterfly, while CItta finished third in all three breaststroke competitions behind Abaliksta.
On the womens's side, Grace Countie, Sophie Lindner, Heidi Lowe, and Greer Pattison featured in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay to close the meet with a first place finish.
Countie also claimed first place 100 Yard Freestyle and placed second in the 150 Yard Freestyle event.
Ellie Vannote picked up two second place finishes in the 100 Yard and 150 Yard Butterfly competitions to add to the women's score.
Other notable performances came from Greer Pattison and Sophie Lindner in their individual events, each earning two second place finishes in addition to their first place performance in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.
In the diving competitions, Anton Down-Jenkins, Paige Burrell, and Aranza Vazquez Montano all picked up first place finishes to complete a clean sweep of the one and three meter diving events.
The Tar Heels will be on the road for their next competition. UNC will compete in a dual meet Georgia on October 22 at 6 p.m.
