GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina diving program dominated the first day of the 2021 ACC Women's Championship on Wednesday from the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The first medals of the four-day championship were handed out in the men's one-meter event. Carolina took home the gold and silver medals as junior Anton Down-Jenkins placed first, while sophomore Alex Hart was the runner-up.Â
Freshman Aranza Vazquez continued her dominating form since joining the Tar Heels in December by winning the women's three-meter event to earn the gold medal with a score of 376.30.
"Today, it was all about trusting everything we've done through the season to get here and it paid off, said Carolina diving coach Yaidel Gamboa. "I'm extremely proud of all our divers. We'll enjoy tonight's victories but we'll move on and get ready for tomorrow. It's a great day to be a Tar Heel!
Down-Jenkins posted the second-highest score in program history with a personal-best 425.85.. That figure draws him closer to the school record of 428.05 that was set by Greg Duncan in 2018.
Hart also set a new personal record with a 384.45, the fourth best number in program history. Fabian Stepinski reached the finals and placed seventh.
The women's 200-yard medley relay team placed seventh, while the 800-yard freestyle squad was 10th.Â
Day two gets underway with prelims of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free at 10 a.m. Also back in action tomorrow will be the divers competing in the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter.
