Track Earns Slew of Firsts and Personal Bests At Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – UNC swept the men's and women's 800 meters and set a facility record in the men's 1,500 meters Saturday in the second and final day of competition at the Tobacco Road Challenge, hosted by Duke. The Tar Heels also got firsts in the women's 100 meters, the men's and women's pole vaults, the men's 400-meter hurdles and the men's shot put after a win in the women's hammer throw on Friday.
In the record-setting men's 1,500 meters, the top five finishers all ran faster than the previous Morris Williams Stadium record, with Tar Heel grad students Thomas Ratcliffe and Brandon Tubby out front with personal bests. Ratcliffe's winning time of 3:39.27 is second in Tar Heel history and Tubby's 3:39.73 is fourth. Patrick Anderson, Will Coogan, Michael Spragley and Marshall Williamson also had personal best times in the race.
In the women's 1,500 meters, senior Mady Clahane placed second in a personal-best 4:24.63.
Freshman Taryn Parks had a personal best 2:06.73 to win the women's 800, and Dolan Owens made it a Tar Heel sweep with a victory in the men's.
Junior Nicole Barnes ran a personal-best 11.71 to win the women's 100 meters.
Tar Heels swept the pole vault with senior Emerson Porter taking first in the women's field and sophomore Ben Finger winning the men's.
For the second weekend in a row, freshman Craig Saddler II was victorious in the 400-meter hurdles.
Senior Daniel McArthur won the men's shot put, giving UNC a second win in the throws after senior Jill Shippee won the women's hammer throw on Friday.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a return trip to Charlottesville, Va., where they competed last weekend. They'll take part in the Virginia Challenge April 16 and 17.
