UNC Holds Steady At ACC Swimming & Diving Championships

ATLANTA – The North Carolina women's swimming and diving team moved up into fifth place, while the Tar Heel men remained in seventh place after three days of competition at the 2022 ACC Championships at the McCauley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Top-ranked Virginia leads the women's field with 790.5 points, more than 100 points ahead of second place NC State (690). Louisville (547.5) is in third place followed by Duke (425) and Carolina (365) to round out the top five.
NC State holds a commanding lead on the men's side with 843.5 points. Louisville is a distant second with 634.5 points followed by Virginia Tech (561), Virginia (487) and Georgia Tech (382.5). North Carolina has scored 332 points.
The Tar Heels' lone medal of the day was captured by sophomore diver Aranza Vazquez, who claimed the bronze medal in the women's three-meter diving competition with a score of 377.20. Miami's Mia Vallee (412.15) and Emma Gullstrand (403.00) finished one and two, respectively.
Carolina relay records continued to fall in Atlanta with the women's 200 medley relay team setting a new mark Thursday night. Greer Pattison, Lilly Higgs, Sophie Lindner, and Grace Countie teamed up to break the previous mark by 0.65 seconds and earn a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:35.58, which is a NCAA Championship automatic qualifying time.
The UNC men's 200 medley relay team of Tucker Burhans, Valdas Abaliksta, Boyd Poelke and Tomas Sungaila posted a NCAA B qualifying time of 1:24.75 in their race.
Other Tar Heels that recorded NCAA B qualifying times included Mia Duus, Patrick Hussey, and Aidan Crisci in the 400-yard IM along with Nick Radkov, Lindner and Sungalia in the 200-yard freestyle.
Poelke and Ellie VanNote each posted IV21 times in the 100-yard butterfly.
The championships continue Friday at 10 a.m. with preliminary events. The finals events start at 6 p.m. They air live on ACC Network Extra and are accessible via the WatchESPN app. Direct links to the ACCNX feeds and live results are available at theACC.com.
