February 5, 2024 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Martin Kartavi, a member of the Israeli National Team, will join the University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team for the 2024-25 season, head coach Mark Gangloff announced Monday.
Â
"This is a great milestone for our program," Gangloff said. "Martin will add tremendously to our sprint program and elevate our men's program for the new challenges of the ACC. This is the strongest recruiting class we've had in my five years at UNC."
Â
Kartavi, primarily a freestyle swimmer, has qualified for the 2024 Olympics in the 50-meter freestyle. His long course best times – according to swimcloud.com – are 22.13 (50m) and 49.99 (100m), achieved at the Rotterdam Qualification meet this past November. He claimed the bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2021 and 2022 European Junior Championships.
Â
Kartvai becomes the 12th member of this year's signing class, which includes sprint freestylers P.J. Foy, Nate Holm, and Sean Setzer, along with junior national champion breaststroker Xavier Ruiz Flores, distance freestyler Brady Begin, backstrokers James Bennison, Adam Maraana, JT Schmid, multi-stroke swimmer Eddie Jin and Canadian junior national team diver Chris Booler.
Â
The Tar Heels return to competition on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Cavalier Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
