
Women’s Swimming Qualifies Seven For NCAA Championships

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's swimming team will send seven qualifiers along with four relay alternates to the NCAA Championships March 19-22 in Federal Way, Wash. Skyler Smith, Greer Pattison, Emma Karam, Mary Macaulay, Sophia Frei, Aislin Farris and Maren Conze earned invitations in individual events, while Elizabeth Sowards, Georgia Nel, Lily Sawyer and Eden Goettsch will travel as relay alternates.
There is the potential for Sowards to join the individual group as she is currently listed as the second alternate overall. Her time of 51.73 in the 100 back missed the cut line by one position.
Smith was the top qualifier of the group, ranking 11th in the 100 breast with a qualifying time of 58.26. She will also compete in the 200 breast, where she ranks 30th nationally, the 50 free and relays. Smith is the current school record holder in the 100 breast and ranks third all-time at UNC in the 200 breast.
Pattison earned her way into the meet with the 14th-fastest time in the country in the 100 back. Her mark of 50.96 ranks third all-time at UNC. Pattison is also expected to compete in the 50 free (No. 5 all-time at UNC), 100 free (No. 8 all-time at UNC) and relays.
Karam qualified in the 200 back at No. 22 nationally with a mark of 1:52.34. That time is good for No. 3 on UNC's all-time list. Karam will also compete in the 100 back (No. 7 all-time at UNC) at the national meet.
Macaulay will compete in three events at NCAAs with her primary events being the 200 fly, where she ranks 24th nationally, and the 200 IM, where she ranks 30th. Her personal best of 1:55.12 in the 200 fly puts her at No. 5 on UNC's all-time list and her mark of 1:56.26 in the 200 IM is third at Carolina. She will also compete in the 400 IM, where she ranks seventh all-time at UNC.
Frei qualified for the national meet in the 200 back, where she ranks 27th in the country. Her personal best of 1:52.64 ranks fourth on UNC's all-time list. She will also compete in the 100 back, where she is tied for 10th all-time at UNC.
Farris earned her way to NCAAs with the 30th-ranked time in the 400 IM. Her 4:08.60 ranks fourth all-time at UNC. She will also compete in the 200 back, where she ranks ninth all-time at UNC.
Conze used a 1:53.29 in the 200 back to take her place at the national meet, ranking 36th nationally. Her personal best in the event ranks at No. 6 all-time at UNC. She will also compete in the 200 free, 500 free and relays at NCAAs.
This group will be joined by a diving contingent that will be determined at the NCAA Zone B Championships in Auburn, Ala. March 9-12. Men's divers will also be determined at that meet, while final qualifiers on the men's side will be announced on Wednesday, March 12.
