General: A strong addition to Carolina's backstroke and IM corps.
Prep: Graduated from Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 22, 2010...began his club swimming career in 1998...swam in high school 2005-09...won the high school state championships in the 200 IM in Oklahoma in 2008 and Arizona in 2009...swam for coach Dave Gibson...swam on two Arizona state championship teams...his club team was runner-up at 2009 winter junior nationals.
Personal: Daniel Malone Hatfield is the son of Eileen Hatfield and James Hatfield...was born in 1991 in Kansas City, Mo. ...has two sisters, Megan, 20, and Sara, 27...stands 6-0 tall...undeclared major.
20 Questions With Freshman Danny Hatfield
Section #1: Swimming & Diving
1. The best thing about being a Tar Heel swimmer is swimming for a school with so much pride, there's no place like Chapel Hill.
2. My favorite thing about competing for Coach DeSelm is becoming the best swimmer I can be.
3. Since my last competitive season, the aspect of my training I've worked on the most is my underwater kicking.
4. My best friend on another college swimming is John Wojciechowski at the University of Michigan.
5. My greatest strength as a swimmer is my competitive nature.
Section #2: Hobbies & Interests
1. Away from the pool and academics, I like to spend time playing basketball, skating, snowboarding, hanging with friends and hiking.
2. On a long bus trip, I'd like to watch Austin Powers (all 3 would satisfy me).
3. If I could compete in another sport at UNC it would be definitely be basketball.
4. If I received free concert tickets via a radio or Internet promotion I would love to see Tupac or the Gorrillaz.
5. The one interest I have that people would be surprised to know is paleontology.
Section #3: Food
1. After a big meet I'd love to see a buffet spread that included Panda Express' Orange Chicken, my Mom's twice-baked potatoes, tea and crumpets, clams and catfish.
2. My favorite beverage is Purple Soda.
3. I'm allowed to enter a room with unlimited snacks, one room has the salty stuff, the other sweet stuff? Which room do I enter and why? I would have to go in the sweet room because candy trumps peanuts hands down.
4. My favorite food made by a relative is a vanilla shake by Eileen Hatfield.
5. On my birthday, I'd love to be treated by my friends to dinner at Long John Silvers.
Section #4: Personality
1. If I possessed the gift of time travel I would go to L.A. during the second half of the 20th century so that I could be a firsthand witness of the music revolution.
2. My most prized personal possession is my cat Nigel.
3. My iTunes library includes 5500 songs of all different genres of music.
4. In a perfect world where making money was not a consideration my dream job would be Ironman.
5. The most interesting person I've met in my time at UNC is Ira Rosenstein.
