General:
Ranks as the 10th fastest 100-yard backstroker in UNC history with a time of 50.59 seconds...a talented returning letter winner…should bolster the Tar Heel backstroke corps…is also strong in the butterfly...set three career bests as a Tar Heel freshman in the 100 and 200 back and the 100 fly…broke the McCallie School record in the 100-yard backstroke previously held by Ted Brisson, the UNC school record-holder in the 100-yard backstroke…competed for the Scenic City Aquatic Club, coached by Stan Corcoran...made several National YMCA swim cuts in 1997 and 1998...in the summer of 2000, he set a YMCA club record in the 100-meter backstroke and was a YMCA All-America in the 100-meter butterfly.
2001-02:
Swam in the ACC Championships and an exhibition entry.
Prep:
Graduated on June 2, 2001 from the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn….swam for McCallie for three years (1999-2001) and lettered in water polo for two years (1999-2000)…eight-time high school All-America in the 100 back, 100 fly, 200 I.M., and 200 medley relay (earned award in each event both as junior and senior)...as a senior, he finished second in the state in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley…during his high school swimming career, McCallie captured the Tennessee state title three years in a row, each year earning coach Stan Corcoran coach of the year honors…was co-captain and recipient of the Coaches’ Award his senior year…was extremely busy out of the pool as he was a member of the Cum Laude Society, Keo-Kio Leadership club, the National Honor Society, co-founder of the Latin Club, Ecology Club member, Honors Orchestra, Glee Club and select ensemble singing groups…an Eagle Scout…also won a Gold Congressional Award…holds the Scenic City Aquatic Club record for the 100-meter backstroke...before attending McCallie, he swam with the local YMCA where he made several national swimming time cuts by 1998.

Given name is Jonathan David Hoyle…nicknamed “Pooch” and “Jonny”…has two brothers and one sister…was born on January 7, 1983 at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C….is the son of David and Janice Hoyle…biggest sports thrill was winning the Tennessee state title in the 200 medley relay his senior because of all the hard work that was put into it...he says “it was an amazing feeling to know that my teammates and I had worked so hard together and had been able to accomplish a difficult and seemingly impossible feat”…athletes he most admires are Sean Quinn, Josh Davis and Michael Jordan...claims he and sophomore teammates Eric Mohr, Reid Owen and John Hartmann managed to down two 24-inch pizzas…his hobbies include tennis, golf, ultimate frisbee and playing the violin…will tell stories about band camp if prodded…his uncle, Lindsey Wrenn, wrestled for UNC from 1970-74…chemistry major…plans medical career.
