Men's Basketball Player of the Week:
David Noel, Freshman, Durham, N.C.
Freshman forward David Noel is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for February 3-9, 2003.
Started at small forward and posted a season-high 19 points playing in his hometown at Duke. He added seven rebounds, two steals, an assist and zero turnovers in 37 minutes against the Blue Devils. Noel was 8 for 14 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from three-point range and had a thunderous dunk in the first half over Duke center Casey Sanders.
Against Florida State, Noel had 11 points, four rebounds and four steals. His steal with 10 seconds left in the game led to a breakaway dunk attempt on which he was fouled. He hit one free throw with 5.6 seconds to play to give Carolina a 61-60 victory. Earlier in the second half, he scored two field goals to erase deficits. Trailing 52-50, Noel hit a three-pointer from the wing to give UNC a 53-52 lead. Then, with FSU ahead, 57-56 with three minutes to play, Noel drove from the corner and dunked to give Carolina the lead.
In the two games, he averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds, was 12 for 21 from the floor.

In UNC's two games last week, both ACC road wins, Brown averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in average of 38.0 minutes of play. She tied for the team scoring lead with 14 points in a 66-63 win at NC State on Friday. With a game-high 22 points in a 67-57 win at Wake Forest on Sunday, she passed the 1,500-point mark for her career and now has 1,512 career points, 14th in UNC history. Against the Demon Deacons, she was 6-for-17 from the field but hit five of her nine three-point attempts and pulled down seven rebounds.
Men's Swimmer of the Week:
Jon Albrecht, Freshman, Akron, Ohio
Albrecht won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and swam on UNC's victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team as the Tar Heels defeated NC State 155-88 in the season finale for both teams Friday. Albrecht took top honors in the 100 with a time of 46.39 and in the 200 with a clocking of 1:40.81. He also swam on the winning relay, splitting a 45.92 as the Tar Heels won in a time of 3:04.60. Carolina's win left the Tar Heels at 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the ACC.
Wrestler of the Week:
Mark Canty So. Gahanna, Ohio
174 pounds
Mark Canty improved to 19-8 on the season with two wins this week over Duke's Tim Marcantonio 12-8 and Navy's Luke Lazzo 14-7 at 174 pounds. Canty pressed his win streak to nine straight with the two victories. He stands at 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season with one match remaining Tuesday night.
