Sophomore forward Nikita Bell averaged 21 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals in three Tar Heel women's basketball victories last week and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for January 27-February 2.
ell shot 60.9 percent from the field. At Maryland on Monday, she scored a career-high 30 points, the most by a Tar Heel in two seasons, and led the team with eight rebounds. She also led UNC in scoring with 21 points in 21 minutes of play against Virginia. Her 21-point average for the week was more than her single-game career high of 18 points heading into the week. On the season, she is averaging 12.3 points (13.9 against ACC teams) and 5.2 rebounds per game and shooting 52.2 percent from the field (a league-high 52.9 against ACC teams)

Soph., Cleveland, Ohio
Scored a career-high 24 points and had 10 rebounds at Georgia Tech and had 22 points against Wake Forest. It was the first time in his career he scored 20 or more points in consecutive games.
Women's Track
Alice Schmidt
Jr., Omaha, Neb.
Schmidt's time of 2:05.75 in the 800-meter bested a field of eight that included no fewer than two Olympians. Brigita Langerholc finished second in the event with a time of 2:06.22. She also posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time and broke her own school record that she set last season.

Shalane Flanagan
Jr., Marblehead, Mass.
Flanagan's time of 9:00.22 broke a 19-year-old school record in the 3,000, the former record was held by Joan Nesbit who posted a mark of 9:06.5 in 1984. Her time, good enough for a fifth-place finish in a world-class field, was nearly 20 seconds faster than the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 9:20.00.

Daniel Pinchbeck
Soph., Edmondson Park, New South Wales, Australia
Pinchbeck swept all four matches he played over the weekend as the Tar Heels opened their season with wins over Princeton 4-3 and 20th-ranked Georgia 5-2. Despite not practicing for two weeks before taking the court against Princeton because of an elbow problem and a stress fracture, Pinchbeck clinched the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Darius Craton. He came back Sunday to beat nationally 35th-ranked Nicolas Boeker of Gerogia 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Pinchbeck also teamed with Andy Metzler to win their #3 doubles match in each outing, helping UNC win the doubles point in both matches. The wins were both decisive, 8-4 over Princeton and 8-3 over Georgia.
Men's Swimming
Justin Donato
Jr., Coatesville, Pa.
Donato anchored both victorious UNC relay teams--400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle--as the Tar Heels routed Georgia Tech and Maryland to clinch UNC's 64th successive season with a winning or .500 record. Donato also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle.
Women's Swimming
Whitney Smith
Jr., Richmond, Va.
Smith was the only doubles UNC winner as Carolina easily defeated #15 Maryland and Georgia Tech in dual meet competition. Smith won both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles--the latter in a career best time--as UNC finished its dual meet season with 12 successive wins, ending up 12-1 and a spotless 7-0 in the ACC.
Wrestling
Evan Sola
So., Wernersville, Pa.
Sola extended his win streak to five straight with a technical fall over Maryland's Mike Lupa, 15-0. Sola leads the Tar Heels with 22 wins this season and has the best winning percentage on the team (.758). He stands at 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with two matches remaining.
