UNC Stands Third After First Day Of ACC Championships

ATLANTA, GA. - After finishing third in both relay events on the first day of competition, the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team also stands third as a team at the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship, being held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
The Maryland Terrapins swept this evening's relays, scoring 80 points and the Terps stand in first place as they seek their first-ever ACC title. Virginia stands second after the first day of competition with 68 points, leading North Carolina by four points (64). Rounding out the field are Clemson (52), Duke (48), Miami (46), NC State (40), Florida State (30), Georgia Tech (28) and Virginia Tech (26).
The Tar Heels finished third in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:18.57 with senior Virginia Hanson leading off that relay in a Georgia Tech Aquatic Center pool record time for the 200-yard freestyle with her split of 1:48.33. That time also moved Hanson into fourth place all-time in the event on the Carolina depth chart. The relay also included junior Amanda Smith (1:49.28), freshman Lindsey Marck (1:50.59) and junior Leila Martin (1:50.37).
The Maryland 800-yard freestyle relay team of Liz Lavell, Chrissy Miller, Meghan Sackett and Sasha Malanina started the meet with a bang for the Terps, setting a new ACC, ACC Championship and Georgia Tech pool record with their time of 7:13.29 in the event.
In the second event of the evening, the 200-yard medley relay, Maryland's foursome of Megan Knepper, Marina Mulyayeva, Gigi DeToll and Cynthia Weir took top honors, clocking a pool record time of 1:40.98. The Tar Heels took third in the relay with a time of 1:42.47. UNC's quartet included sophomore Meagan Eickman (26.14), junior Lizzy Bruce (29.02), freshman Lindsey Marck (24.26) and freshman Kelsey Morrissy (23.05).
The Championship will resume tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. Events Thursday include the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay.
