CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 2 North Carolina scored 10 runs over the first four innings and pounded out 15 hits in an 11-2 win over visiting Towson Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. Five Tar Heels had two hits apiece as Carolina (18-3) scored 10 or more runs for the third straight game.
Center fielder Mike Cavasinni recorded his first career multi-hit game with two singles and one run batted in. Third baseman Reid Fronk, designated hitter Kyle Shelton, shortstop Josh Horton and second baseman Bryan Steed also added two hits on the afternoon.
In his first career start, freshman righty Adam Warren (1-0) earned the win in a predetermined staff outing. He went three innings, struck out two and allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. Sophomore Tyler Trice came on to start the fourth and tossed two shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.
Freshman left-hander Brian Farrell fanned two in a scoreless sixth, as did sophomore righty Rob Wooten in the seventh. Freshman lefty Matt Cox went the final two innings and retired six of the seven batters he faced with three strikeouts.
Towson starter Steve Johnson (1-1) took the loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits and five walks over three innings. Third baseman A.J. Tinnerella and right fielder Adam Heffron each had two hits for Towson.
The Tigers (7-13) scratched in the top of the first on an RBI single up the middle by Tinnerella, forcing the Tar Heels to play from behind early for the sixth straight game. But Carolina came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After first baseman Chad Flack plated the first run with an RBI single, catcher Tim Federowicz doubled home the go-ahead runs with a bouncer down the left field line.
Cavasinni singled and scored on a double play grounder in the second, and the Tar Heels tacked on four more runs in the third to break the game open. Cavasinni hit into a double play to plate the first run of the frame, and Fronk, Shelton and left fielder Jay Cox followed with successive RBI base hits for a six-run cushion. Fronk and Cox, who extended his season-long hitting streak to eight games, each doubled.
Carolina found the scoring column again in the fourth to push the lead to 10-2. Horton doubled and scored on a double by Steed, who later crossed the plate on an RBI single from Cavasinni. The Tar Heels scored their final run in the seventh when catcher Benji Johnson, who entered in the sixth, doubled home pinch runner Mike McKee.
The series continues at 3 p.m. Wednesday with redshirt freshman righty Luke Putkonen set to start for the Tar Heels.
