Virginia Tops Tar Heel Women's Swimmers & Divers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - No. 10 Virginia defeated No. 14 North Carolina in women's swimming and diving action Saturday afternoon by a 182.5-117.5 margin. Carolina's individual victories came in the two diving events and in the two sprint freestyle races. Tar Heel swimmers had 11 season best times including two career best clockings.
The Tar Heels fell to 4-3 with the loss and 2-1 in the ACC. Carolina will host Duke, undefeated in the ACC and with only one loss overall next Friday at 6 p.m. on Senior Night in Koury Natatorium. It will be the final home meet for six UNC seniors -Whitney Sprague, Lindsay McIlvain, Kimmy Davis, Katy Pritchett and Aubrette Biegel and Erica Schiffler.
UNC swept the two diving events Saturday. The Tar Heels finished 1-2-3 in one-meter diving with freshman Kristin Arnold winning with a score of 261.9 points while freshman Jenna Moore finished second and senior Katy Pritchett third. Moore took top honors in three-meter diving with a score of 247.57 points.
Junior Megan Steeves and sophomore Rebecca Kane traded wins in the two freestyle sprints as Steeves topped the field in the 100 free at 50.61 and Kane won the 50 in 23.19, just .02 off her season best.
UNC's 200-yard medley relay of Steeves, Layne Brodie, Sarah Tanner and Kane went a season best 1:42.35.
Laura Moriarty finished second in the 200 fly with a career best 2:00.45. Freshman Marie Pesecreta went a career best 2:03.77 in the 200 back.
Other season best times were recorded by Katelyn Martin, 10:03.00 in 1000 free; Ashley Miller, 10:12.17 in the 1000 free; Candace Cooper, 57.84 in 100 back and 54.85 in 100 free; Sarah List, 57.91 in 100 back; Katie Keel, 1:04.44 in 100 breast and 2:18.60 in 200 breast; Lauren Ruscoe, 2:05.70 in 200 fly.
