ATHENS, GA. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their dual meets with the University of Georgia Friday afternoon at the Gabrielsen Natatorium inside the Ramsey Center on the UGA campus. The Tar Heel men defeated the Bulldogs 156-144 to post Carolina's first win over Georgia since October 13, 2004 while the Georgia women, runners-up in the 2009 NCAA Championships, defeated the UNC women 160-126.
The Carolina men and Georgia men each won eight events with the Bulldogs winning both relays and six individual events while the Tar Heels won eight individual events. UNC's overall depth and Carolina's dominance on the diving boards helped the Tar Heels compile the necessary points to pull off the 12-point victory. The win was Carolina's first over Georgia since the Tar Heels beat the Bulldogs 176-124 at Koury Natatorium on October 13, 2004.
UNC got individual victories in the 1000-yard freestyle by Joe Kinderwater, the 200-yard freestyle by Wil Singley, the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes by Vinny Pryor, the 100-yard backstroke by Jim Flannery, the 400-yard individual medley by Tyler Harris and in both diving events with wins by Jake Kinzbach on the one-meter board and David Solarz on the three-meter board. On the women's side, Laura Moriarty was the sole individual event winner as she captured the 200-yard breaststroke but Tar Heel head coach Rich DeSelm was still impressed with the effort of his women's squad.
"We always enjoy swimming the University of Georgia and like most years it was another great competition. Their women are outstanding. They always have one of the best teams in the country and this year is no exception. They could be on their way to vying for a national championship. While their women are talented and deep I was extremely proud of our women. Our goal was to be competitive in each and every event and there was not a single woman on our team who did not give 100 percent effort," said DeSelm.
"We had women going as fast or faster as at any time this season and they did so in the midst of a hard training week and on the road against a team which boasts swimmers who have won multiple individual national championships. Our women's divers also did extremely against the top-flight NCAA level divers Georgia has."
The UNC men built an early lead in the meet and held off a Georgia rally in the second half of the competition. Junior Joe Kinderwater of Lancaster, Pa. edged out Troy Prinsloo of Georgia in the 1000-yard freestyle, 9:05.20 to 9:05.98, to give the Tar Heels early momentum in the second event of the meet. Prinsloo was the 2009 NCAA champion in the 1650-yard freestyle. UNC won five of the first eight events in the meet. In the first half of the meet, Georgia won the 200-yard medley relay, the 50-yard freestyle and Mark Dylla, 2009 NCAA runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly, won that event for UGA.
"The men had an outstanding meet, starting off with the medley relay where we were 2-3-4. We had intense and gutsy performances by almost every guy on the team," said DeSelm.
"You could argue our divers won the meet for us. Jake Kinzbach, Ryland Jones and David Solarz were 1-3-4 on the one-meter board and Solarz, Kinzbach and Jones were 1-2-4 on the three-meter."
The three-meter diving points were crucial for Carolina. After the one-meter diving competition at the halfway point, Georgia won four of the next five events. But UNC's performance on the three-meter board and Tyler Harris' subsequent win in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 3:52.97 allowed the Tar Heels to clinch the team win before the start of the 400-yard freestyle relay.
"Those diving points were big points and they came at critical times in the meet," DeSelm said. "But this was truly a team win. On the swimming side, we had event winners in the 1000 free (Kinderwater), 200 free (Singley), 100 breast (Pryor), 200 breast (Pryor), 400 IM (Harris) and 100 back (Flannery). In many events we had at least two of the three of the top finishers.
"During the second half of the meet Georgia came on strong in the 100 free, 200 back and especially in the 100 fly where they swept us 1-2-3, but our guys never gave up and kept pressing. We had the meet won before the free relay. That was a relief because last year we had a chance to earn a tie with a 1-2 finish in the 400 free relay in the meet in Chapel Hill but came up just short and lost by four points overall."
UNC will next be in action when it hosts the North Carolina Aquatic Club Mile Meet Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Koury Natatorium. UNC will host Georgia Tech in a dual meet next Saturday at 11 a.m. at Koury Natatorium.
UNC's men improved to 4-0 on the season and the women are 3-1. Friday's meet marked the season opener for the Bulldogs.
"We probably benefitted this being our third competition of the season," DeSelm said. "This was Georgia first meet. The bottom line is I am very proud of both of our teams."
