Tar Heel Men Begin 2010 ACC Championships In First Place

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The UNC men began their first session of the 2010 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday night at Koury Natatorium with the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays. The Tar Heels won the 200 medley relay for the first time in 14 year, giving them a one-point lead over Virginia after the first night.
Carolina leads the meet in first place with a score of 74, followed closely by the University of Virginia with a score of 73.
Junior Josh Hafkin led off the 200-yard medley relay with the backstroke leg touching in a time of 22.17 Another junior, Vinny Pryor, followed in a time of 24.91 swimming the breaststroke leg, then junior Tommy Wyher swam butterfly in a time of 20.16 Sophomore Steve Cebertowicz anchored the relay swimming freestyle in a time of 19.39.
UNC touched in first place by exactly a second with a time of 1:26.63, a new pool and school record. It has been 14 years since the Tar Heel men have won the 200-medley relay at ACC Championships. That 1996 relay consisted of Ted Brisson, Steve Bonack, Tucker Shade and Matt Branum.
The 800-yard freestyle relay was led off by sophomore Evan Reed in a time of 1:36.99. Junior Chip Peterson followed in a time of 1:35.73, then sophomore Wil Singley touched in 1:37.00, and senior Hank Browning anchored in a time of 1:36.17. The Tar Heels finished in second place with a time of 6:25.89. Both UNC and UVA broke the previous pool record of 6:27.08 set in 2003.
Prelims will begin Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Koury Natatorium and will include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle.
