Tar Heel Women Complete First Day Of NCAA Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Carolina women are in a tie for 29th place after the first night of the 2010 Division I Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships taking place in West Lafayette, Indiana. The 200-yard freestyle relay composed of Rebecca Kane, Katie Nolan, Layne Brodie and Sarah Tanner finished in 15th place overall Thursday night with a time of 1:31.54. The relay touched in a time of 1:30.44 in prelims.
In the morning session, Junior Katura Harvey placed 21st in the 500-yard freestyle finishing .03 seconds off her season best time touching in a time of 4:43.56.
Sophomores Layne Brodie and Sarah Tanner both swam the 200-yard individual medley. Brodie placed 23rd with a time of 1:59.13 and Tanner finished in a time of 2:03.85.
Junior Rebecca Kane finished 19th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.51, a tenth of a second off her career best time.
The women were disqualified in the 400-yard medley relay because of a false start on the third leg of the relay.
Prelims will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday morning and will consist of the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
