ChAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Carolina women are in a tie for 18th place with 29 points after day two of the 2010 NCAA Division-I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, which are taking place in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Tar Heels had two individuals qualify for the finals session on Friday along with their 200-yard medley relay.
The women placed tenth in the 200-yard medley relay touching in a time of 1:38.60, almost a second faster than their morning swim of 1:39.43. Carly Smith led off the relay in a time of 25.00, followed by Layne Brodie who split the breaststroke leg in a time of 27.85, then Katie Nolan who went 23.59 for the butterfly leg, and Rebecca Kane anchored with freestyle in a time of 22.16.
"We were excited to be in the consolation final of the medley relay and have a chance to score," said head coach Rich DeSelm. "The four girls came together and had a great relay, our second best time of the year."
Sophomore Laura Moriarty competed in the consolation finals of the 400-yard individual medley. Moriarty finished in 12th place with a time of 4:09.97.
"Laura Moriarty has put together four fabulous 400 IMs in the past month and I am very proud of her," said DeSelm.
Freshman Carly Smith also swam in the consolation heat of the 100-yard backstroke and placed 11th with a career best time of 52.69.
"Carly has been extremely consistent in her 100-backstroke races having swum three around 52 mid, which is impressive," said DeSelm.
The Tar Heels will be back in action for the final day of the meet Saturday morning for prelims starting at 11 a.m. The events include 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 200-butterfly, 1650-freestyle and the 400-freestyle relay.
