CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to dual meet competition on Monday as they defeated Clemson at Koury Natatorium. The UNC men won 178-118 while the women prevailed 183-104.
Both Carolina teams improved to 5-1 overall and to 4-0 in the ACC heading into Saturday's showdown with Virginia at Koury Natatorium. The Clemson men are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC and the Clemson women are 4-3 overall and now 1-2 in the league.
"It's great to return to ACC competition with Clemson today and Virginia on Saturday. We used today to get back into racing shape because most of our team hasn't competed in a meet since before exams," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "We are certainly off the times we did in the Nike Cup but that is somewhat to be expected and we will need to be way better on Saturday to be competitive with Virginia."
"Several of our men competed in Dallas this past weekend and despite that schedule and the travel yesterday some of them were sharper for having competed. I'm hopeful the entire team competing today will have far better results on Saturday," said DeSelm. "This is the time of the season where the team understands it has been training very hard. Despite being off peak times today from their best times of the season we will be faster soon."
"Our challenge this week will be to train with intensity and focus on detailed execution and to prepare to be a great team as we face a great Virginia team on Saturday."
The Tar Heels will host defending ACC champion Virginia on Saturday with the men's meet beginning at 12 noon and the women's at 3 p.m. Both meets will be webcast live on TarHeelBlue.com.

Other individual winners for UNC were Dan'Connor in the 1000-yard freestytle, Brad Hamilton in the 100-yard breaststroke, Brett Nagle in the 500-yard freestyle and David MacDonald in one-meter diving.
