Tom Luchsinger Named Tar Heel Perfomer Of The Week

Junior swimmer Tom Luchsinger has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for February 20-26, 2012 after he won two individual titles and appeared on the awards platform a total of four times at the ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Tom Luchsinger won a pair of individual championships to lead North Carolina to a third-place finish in the ACC Championships. Luchsinger repeated as the champion in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:44.53, edging teammate Dominick Glavich by .12 of a second. He also won the 400-yard individual medley in 3:56.91, beating tournament MVP Mateo De Angulo of Florida State by .62 of a second. Luchsinger also swam on UNC's 200-yard medley relay which placed third, its 800-yard freestyle relay which copped second and the 400-yard medley relay which recorded a fourth place finish. He also placed fourth individually in the 200-yard individual medley.

Sophomore third baseman Colin Moran became just the second Tar Heel in the last 20 years to record a cycle as he went for a natural cycle against Wright State Saturday. Moran matched a career high with five hits and six RBI in the 14-0 win over Wright State. The Rye, N.Y., native posted a single in the first, a double in the third, a triple in the seventh and capped it off with a three-run home run in the eighth before adding a RBI single in the ninth. Moran leads the team with 10 RBI on the year and hit .467 for the week.

Marcus Holman had a game-high six points, including two goals and a career-high four assists, as UNC staged its biggest fourth quarter rally since April 13, 1996 in Carolina's 9-8 win at Navy Saturday. Holman was involved in four of Carolina's last five goals of the game with a goal and three assists in that span. UNC trailed 8-5 going into the fourth quarter and staged its rally late. Holman assisted on a Thomas Wood goal at 7:44 to cut the lead to 8-7, scored the game-tying goal with 4:33 to play and then assisted on the game-winner by Thomas Wood with 1:16 left. His previous high for assists in a game was three versus Robert Morris on April 17, 2010.

R.G. Keenan was a huge key in Carolina's 9-8 comeback win at Navy, dominating the X and keying UNC's biggest fourth quarter rally since April 13, 1996. Keenan won 18 of 20 face-offs, including all five in the fourth quarter when UNC outscored Navy 4-0, outshot them 15-1 and won the ground ball battle 9-3. Keenan's 18 face-off wins were the second most of his career (19 vs. Penn State two weeks ago) and his 90 percent winning percentage was the best in a single game in his career (previous was .889 last Saturday vs. Detroit). He won 11 of his 18 face-off wins to himself. Those 11 ground balls were one shy of his career high (12 vs. Navy and UMBC last season).

Friend scored four goals and gathered a ground ball in Carolina's 16-7 win over No. 19 Albany on Friday night, then tallied five goals and one assist in Sunday's 18-9 win over No. 10 Vanderbilt. For the week, the sophomore attacker combined for nine goals and one assist as the third-ranked Tar Heels improved to 5-0 this season.

Tar Heel sophomore Katherine Perry tied for 16th place with a 6-over-par 222 total at the Central District Invitational played Feb. 20-21 at the River Wilderness Golf Club, a par 72, 6,218-yard layout. Perry fired a 1-under 71 in the final round after carding 73-78 in the first two rounds. She led the seventh-ranked Tar Heels to an eighth-place finish in their first event of the spring campaign. Carolina returns to action March 2-4 at the Darius Rucker Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C.
