Carolina Sweeps Dual Meets From Louisville Cardinals
November 2, 2013 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, the North Carolina men's and women's swimmers and divers defeated Louisville Saturday afternoon at Koury Natatorium. The meet featured an 18-event, two-day program for each of the squads.
Carolina entered day two with narrow leads in both team races but pulled away for comfortable victories in the end. The #17 UNC men defeated #13 Louisville 186-161, while the #9 UNC women downed the #12 Cardinals 213-140.
UNC won five individual events on the women's side on day two and four on the men's side. Each team also captured one relay event on Saturday. Carolina's depth proved an important asset in both meets to allow the Tar Heels to pull away.
On the men's side, UNC won the 200-yard medley relay and got individual wins from Dominick Glavich, Nic Graesser, Eugene Tee and Ozzie Moyer. Glavich's win in the 100 fly was his third individual win of the two-day meet. Graesser won both the 100 back and swam the backstroke leg on the victorious 200 medley relay.
Stephanie Peacock won the 1000 freestyle in a season best 9:38.51 after triumphing in the 500 free on Friday. Senior co-captain Katie Rechsteiner also won her second event of the meet, taking the 100 breast. Carly Smith, Ally Hardesty and Danielle Siverling were also individual winners on the second day. Both Hardesty and Siverling also swam on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that took home first place.
"We were very much looking forward to this weekend. We've had a very challenging fall with the meets we've set up," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "It was really good to swim at home. Louisville has an excellent team. We knew they were good. They have some of the best sprinters in the country and they are well coached. So to get a win for our guys was huge."
"Dominick (Glavich) comes through almost every time (for us). He's very talented," DeSelm added. "He's a game day racer and he knows how to get his hand on the wall. I think he'll be even better as we get further along in the season."
"Stephanie Peacock went for it in the 1000. That was a good swim. That's a confidence builder going 9:38," said DeSelm. "I'll take that. I think she feels good about it and we're putting in some hard work right now."
