GREENSBORO, N.C. — Freshman Sophie Lindner continued her unbelievable first season with the Tar Heels by qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday at the 2018 USA Swimming Winter National Championships. Though she finished the prelims in 10th with a time of 1:02.89, Lindner won the B final in 1:02.50 — the eighth-fastest finals time — and secured a coveted opportunity to compete on the international stage.

Prior to the Georgia Tech Invitational on Nov. 15-17, Lindner was undefeated in each of her individual events and relay appearances. While her undefeated streak was broken in Atlanta, Ga., the Raleigh, N.C. native still managed to set four personal records in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.

Three other Carolina underclassmen further established Carolina's exciting future. Sophomore Dimitrios Dimitriou finished 11th in the men's 200-meter freestyle B final with 1:53.09 on the scoreboard. Freshmen Tucker Burhans earned his spot in the men's 100-meter butterfly C final. Burhans swam his prelim race in 55.69 before finishing 23rd with a time of 56.03. Freshman Grace Countie snagged a finals appearance in the women's 100-meter backstroke, placing 20th overall with a time of 1:03.54.
