Four Tar Heel Runners Qualify for NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After three Tar Heels earned NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships spots in field events on the first two days of competition at the NCAA East Preliminaries, Friday it was the UNC runners' turn. Four of them earned the right to compete in Eugene, Ore., next month, two in the 1500 meters and two in the 5000 meters.
In the 1500m, graduate student Brandon Tubby was fifth in 3:38.38 and senior Jesse Hunt was ninth in 3:39.47 to advance, both with personal-best times.
Later in the evening, two Tar Heel graduate students took top-five spots to advance in the 5000m. Thomas Ratcliffe was third in 13:40.76 and Conor Lundy was fifth in a personal-best 13:41.32, with both moving on to compete in Oregon.
Draven Crist in the high jump and the 4x100 relay turned in season-best performances, but they weren't enough to advance.
In the final event of the night, the 4x400 relay, UNC appeared set to advance but was ultimately disqualified.
Action resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. with the women's high jump. UNC's first race of the day is the 4x100 relay at 5:30 p.m.
