Eight Divers To Compete At NCAA Zone Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Eight Tar Heels will be in action this week at the 2023 NCAA Zone B Championships hosted by the University of Tennessee at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
The zone championships will begin Sunday, March 5, and conclude on Wednesday, March 8. The meet will be streamed online Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, while live results of each event will be available each day on DiveMeets.com.
Paige Burrell, Emily Grund, Haley Marshall, Jessica Paul, Lara Phipps and Aranza Vazquez will represent the Tar Heels on the women's side, while Anton Down-Jenkins and Alex Hart will participate in the men's competition.
Grund, Marshall and Vazquez will compete in the women's 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events, while Burrell will take the boards on the 1-meter and 3-meter with Phipps participating in the 3-meter and platform, and Paul on the 1-meter.
Down-Jenkins and Hart will each compete in the men's 1-meter and 3-meter events.
The top five finishers from 1-meter and top six performers on 3-meter and platform will qualify for the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships and return to the venue in Knoxville being held on March 15-18 at the venue in Knoxville.
The men's NCAA Championships will be held the following week, March 21-25, in Minneapolis, Minn.
Vazquez finished first on the 1-meter and third on the 3-meter springboard at the Zone B championships a year ago and claimed the bronze medal in the 1-meter competition at the 2022 NCAA Championships after finishing runner-up in both events as a freshman in 2021. She swept the springboard events and won the platform diving competition earlier this season at the ACC Championships.
Grund will be making her fourth NCAA zone appearance, but first since 2021. She finished in the top eight on the 3-meter and platform as a junior in 2021 after placing fifth in the 3-meter and seventh in the 1-meter events in 2020. During her freshman season of 2019, she claimed first place in 3-meter event.
Burrell makes her third NCAA zone appearance after placing 13th in the 1-meter springboard and 20th in the 3-meter competition as sophomore last season. Marshall, Paul and Phipps are each competing in their first regional championship.
Down-Jenkins is a three-time 1-meter Zone B regional champion and two-time 3-meter gold medalist. The two-time ACC Diver of the Year and six-time All-America recipient, he finished among the top eight in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the national championship meet last season.
Hart is competing in his fourth regional championship meet. He placed fourth in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter a year ago to qualify for the NCAA national championship meet in each event.
