Aranza Vazquez Montaño Repeats As NCAA 1M Diving Champion

ATHENS, Ga. – UNC senior diver Aranza Vazquez Montaño won the 2024 NCAA Women's Division I 1-Meter Diving Championship on Thursday night, clinching her second consecutive national title in the event.
The La Paz, Mexico, native claimed her third overall national championship with a score of 350.50. Texas junior Hailey Hernandez finished second overall with a score of 326.20 in the finals.
Hernandez posted the top score in the prelims, 305.65, finishing 2.80 points in front of Vazquez (302.85).
Vazquez moved into first place after round three and didn't relinquish the lead. She posted a score of 61.10 in the fifth round to take a 16-point lead heading into the final round of the competition.
On her final dive of the night, she recorded her top score of the event, 67.50, to seal the victory.
Vazquez is the first Tar Heel to repeat as national champion since Sue Walsh won three consecutive 100 and 200 backstroke titles from 1982-84.
North Carolina remains 15th after two days of competition at the 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with 34 points.
The 200-freestyle relay foursome of Delaney Carlton, Greer Pattison, Skyler Smith, and Georgia Nel finished 19th at 1:29.02.
The third day of competition includes the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 3-meter diving, and 400-yard medley relay. The prelims start at 10 a.m., with the finals commencing at 6 p.m.
Vazquez will look to win her fourth overall national championship and second straight on the 3-meter springboard.
