CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 18th-ranked women and 23rd-ranked men of the University of North Carolina swimming and diving program have achieved early leads Thursday night in the 1999 Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at the Maurice. J. Koury Natatorium at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Action continues on Friday and Saturday with preliminaries each day at 10:30 a.m. and finals each night at 6:30 p.m.

North Carolina's men are in the lead with a 369 point total. LSU is in second place with 295 points and Texas A&M is third with 202 points.
The Tar Heel women took the lead in the first event of the night and did not look back. The Tar Heels' 200-yard freestyle relay of Katie Hathaway, Summer Mack, Christy Watkins and Stefanie Rulis touched first in 1:35.03 to start a strong string of swims by UNC participants.
The UNC women dominated the 500-yard freestyle even though the Tar Heels did not produce the individual winner. LSU sophomore Mandy Leach won the championship in an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:54.58. Led by sophomore Molly Sullivan's third-place finish, UNC swimmers also finished 5-6-7-8-9-13-14 in the event. The Tar Heel women swept the top four places in the 200-yard individual medley led by the winning performance of sophomore Katie Hathaway at 2:02.41 (NCAA "B" cut). Senior Kelly McLaughlin finished second, freshman Janna Turner third and senior Ilana Kavadlo was fourth. UNC-Wilmington junior Kate Milling won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.83 seconds, edging North Carolina junior Summer Mack. Sophomore Jamie Watkins of LSU led a 1-2-3 sweep of the three-meter diving for the Tigers, winning the event with 514.40 points.
Carolina took the top two places in the final event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet of freshman Christy Watkins, sophomore Katie Hathaway, junior Summer Mack and senior Jen Starsburger edged their teammates by only six one-hundredths of a second to capture the event.
On the men's side, the Louisiana State University men's 200-yard freestyle relay team captured first place in a time of 1:21.97. The winning Tiger relay consisted of Rodrigo Castro, Mattias Ohlin, Calton Greer and Ken Kuhn.

Carolina swimmers took 2-4-8-9-11 in the event led by the runnerup finish of junior tri-captain Brad Kline. Carolina swimmers took 1-2 in the men's 200-yard individual medley as sophomore Chris Helin took the Nike Cup title in 1:49.58 (NCAA "B" cut). That time was also a career best time for the Long Island native. UNC junior Dave Slawinski finished in second place with a time of 1:50.39. Carolina swimmers also took 5-7-8-11-16 in the event. LSU junior Ken Kuhn captured the title in the 50-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.31 seconds. Carolina sophomore Kevin Erndl took second in 20.53.
