CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's seventh-ranked men's lacrosse team will be looking to secure its first bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament since 1998 when the Tar Heels close the regular season by hosting sixth-ranked Ohio State Saturday at 12 noon at Fetzer Field. A win over the Buckeyes will certainly guarantee Coach John Haus' Tar Heels of a bid to the 16-team tournament field when bids are announced Monday afternoon at 3:40 p.m. on ESPNNews.
The task will not be an easy one for North Carolina (8-4). The Buckeyes are the nation's hottest team, having won 11 matches in a row. The Buckeyes won the Great Western Lacrosse League championship outright at 5-0 and Ohio State brings an overall record of 12-2 to Chapel Hill. OSU has not lost since falling in overtime at UMBC on March 7.
Gates at Fetzer Field will open at 11 a.m. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. UNC faculty, staff and students will be admitted free with their UNC One Cards.
UNC defeated Limestone 17-8 this past Wednesday, playing for the first time in 12 days since a semifinal loss in the 2004 ACC Tournament. Ohio State last played against Fairfield last Saturday when the Buckeyes defeated the Stags 10-7.
The game will feature a matchup of Carolina alumni on the sidelines with John Haus, '83, piloting the Tar Heels, and Joe Breschi, '90, leading the Buckeyes.
Saturday will mark the final home match for nine Tar Heel seniors -- attackman Andrew Lucas of Glen Arm, Md., midfielder Johnny Seivold of Efland, N.C., midfielder Dave Duffy of Garden City, N.Y., midfielder Dan Stringer of Towson, Md., defeseman Ronnie Staines of Severna Park, Md., defenseman Matt Pessagno of Harwood, Md., defenseman Brad Coker of Annapolis, Md., midfielder Kevin Frew of Baldwin, Md. and midfielder Phil Pennington of Birmingham, Mich.
