Carolina Claims Wins Over Johns Hopkins In Swimming & Diving

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming teams improved their dual meet records to 7-1 and 8-1 respectively Wednesday afternoon with wins over Johns Hopkins at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel men stroked their way to a 181-108 victory over the Blue Jays while the UNC women eased their way to a 206-73 triiumph.
The UNC women turned in the top time or score in all 16 events on the afternoon while the Tar Heel men had the best time or score in 14 events. UNC junior Leila Martin was the individual victor in women's 50-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle on the women's side. Sophomore Meagan Eickman was the winner of the 100-yard butterfly and she also swam on both UNC relays which turned in the fastest times.
Junior Emily Carroll, junior Britton Banning-Arndt and freshman Kesley Morrissey each had one individual event win and one winning relay performance for the Tar Heel women.
On the men's side, Tar Heel junior Patrick Woodruff and Chad Ames both won two events. Woodruff took the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke and Ames won the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. Both sophomore Tristan Davidson and sophomore Jared Kleber each had one individual win and swam on one winning relay.
UNC travels to Charlottesville, Va. Saturday to meet the Virginia Cavaliers with the men swimming at 1 p.m. and the women at 4 p.m. It will be a matchup of four nationally-ranked teams with the Virginia men 10th and the UNC men 19th and the UNC women 15th and the Virginia women 16th.
