INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The University of North Carolina's 800-yard freestyle relay team swam the second fastest time in the event in Tar Heel history Wednesday night as the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships began at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The UNC relay finished 20th in a time of 6:21.99. Although the time was shy of setting the school record which is 6:19.20 set last month at the ACC Championships, it was still the second fastest 800 free relay in UNC history. The school record coming into this season had been 6:22.47.
The Tar Heel relay Wednesday included Jorden Merrilees (1:35.07), Henry Campbell (1:34.23), Philip Perdue (1:37.31) and Michael Meyer (1:35.38).
UNC will continue its participation in the NCAA Championships beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday. Prelims each of the next three days are at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
Four Tar Heel swimmers - Merrilees, Campbell, Craig Emslie and Meyer - and three divers - Jack Nyquist, Sean Burston, Bryan Allen - will be in action in individual events over the next three days.
