Moffitt Smashes School Record In 100 Fly

2017 All-America takes 5th in event.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Hellen Moffitt finished fifth in the 100-meter butterfly and Caroline Baldwin qualified in fifth place in the preliminaries in the 50-meter backstroke on Thursday at the 2017 Phillips 66 U.S. Swimming National Championships and World Championships Trials at the IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
Moffitt, a 2017 alumna from Alexandria, Va., twice swam under her previous school record in the 100-meter butterfly on Thursday. She swam the preliminaries in 58.24 and qualified in the second spot. That broke her previous school record of 58.46 which she set at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. In the championship final, Moffitt placed fifth with another outstanding swim to her credit as she clocked a 58.40.
Rising senior Caroline Baldwin of Westfield, N.J., qualified in a tie for fifth place in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 28.51 seconds. Unfortunately, she was disqualified in the championship final. Rising senior Katie Ford of Mount Lebanon, Pa., swam a time of 30.21 seconds in the event.
Incoming freshman Caroline Hauder of Waxhaw, N.C., finished 20th in the women's 50-meter breaststroke on Thursday night. Hauder qualified 22nd in a time of 32.24 seconds and that she improved two spots in the finals to 20th, going 32.27, just off her morning time.
A pair of Tar Heel men's swimmers also competed on Thursday with rising sophomore Brendan Feehery of Flower Mound, Texas, placing 30th in the 400-meter individual medley in a time of 4:28.87, and rising senior Michael McBryan taking 46th in the 50-meter breaststroke in a time of 29.58.
