Freshman point guard Raymond Felton is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for March 10-16, 2003.
Felton had 20 points and 10 assists to lead Carolina to an 84-72 upset win over 14th-ranked Maryland in the quarterfinals of the ACC men's Basketball Tournament. The following game, Felton had 18 points and five assists in the a loss to eventual champion Duke.
He became the first Tar Heel freshman to earn first-team All-ACC Tournament honors since Jerry Stackhouse in 1994. Felton is the sixth UNC frosh to accomplish this, joining Phil, Mike O'Koren, Sam Perkins, Michael Jordan and Stackhouse.

Ramon Bescansa, Men's Golf
Senior Ramon Bescansa picked up his first collegiate win last weekend, capturing the individual title at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic. escansa fired a seven-under-par 137 total with rounds of three-under 69 and four-under 68. He finished one stroke ahead of Geoffrey Harris of Old Dominion who held the lead after the first round. Bescansa led Carolina to the team title as well. The Tar Heels posted a 573 total in the rain-shortened event, finishing seven strokes ahead of Virginia Tech.
Crystal Cox, Pitcher, Softball
Freshman Crystal Cox led the Tar Heels to their longest winning-streak of the season at eight games last week, including the Hokie Fastpitch Club Classic tournament championship. Cox opened the week with a complete-game shutout over Furman, allowing three hits and striking out 12. The next day versus Charlotte, the Harrisburg, N.C., native picked up her second straight shutout of the week holding the 49ers to just one hit and struck out 11. In the opening game of the tournament, Georgia State broke Cox?s 14 consecutive scoreless innings streak with an unearned run in the first inning as Cox improved to 3-0 on the week, holding the Panthers to two earned runs, while striking out seven. Against Coastal Carolina, Cox threw her third shutout of the week allowing just one hit in six innings of work, striking out eight. In the final game of the tournament, Cox came into the game in the seventh inning versus Virginia Tech with second and third with one out and got out of the inning picking up her first save of the season, helping the Tar Heels win the tourney title. Cox was named to the all-tournament team and ended the week 4-0, with three shutouts. She pitched in 27.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, three runs, two earned runs, 38 strikeouts and had an ERA of 0.51.
