Swimming Continues Competition at Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team continued on Friday to dominate the 13th annual Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of North Carolina's Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. Meanwhile, the 25th-ranked Clemson University women's swimming team continued its superb swimming and it leads the field by a wide margin going into the final day of competition on Saturday.
Coach Frank Comfort's men's swimming and diving team leads the men's field with 728 points with 14 of 20 events now completed in the meet. Clemson is in second place with 366, followed by 19th-ranked LSU in third place with 306. Twenty-fifth-ranked Kansas is fourth with 286 points. The rest of the men's field has N.C. State at 233, Kentucky at 207, Syracuse at 156, Old Dominion at 105, James Madison at 83, Connecticut at 78, East Carolina at 64 and UNC-Wilmington at 18.
North Carolina's men won six of the seven events on Friday night, including both the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays. The Tar Heel 200-yard medley relay team of senior Ted Brisson, sophomore Ethan Hall, senior Tucker Shade and freshman Kevin Erndl set a Nike Cup record in the event with a time of 1:29.77.
Shade also set a Nike Cup record in the 100-yard butterfly with a clocking of 47.92. Sophomore Mark Siedman won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:52.99, the third fastest time in University of North Carolina swimming history in that event. Other individual winners for UNC were Hall in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.08) and Brisson in the 100-yard backstroke (49.35). Hall's time in the 100-yard breaststroke is the seventh-fastest in UNC history.
The Clemson women, like the UNC men, are making mincemeat of the field. The Tigers lead the standings with 771.5 points, while 16th-ranked North Carolina is second with 521 points. #19 Kentucky is third with 432, followed by Kansas with 354 and 24th-ranked LSU with 335.5. The rest of the field includes N.C. State with 155 points, Syracuse with 91, Connecticut with 69, Old Dominion with 31, UNC-Wilmington with 16 and East Carolina with 14.
Kentucky's women won both relay events on Friday night. Clemson claimed two individual titles and Kentucky won one individual crown. The Tar Heels also claimed two individual event titles. Freshman Katie Hathaway won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.06 and sophomore Summer Mack won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.93. Mack's 100-yard backstroke time is the second fastest time in that event in UNC history. Hathaway also recorded the fourth fastest performance in UNC history in the 400-yard individual medley, clocking a 4:16.75. That was a 1999 NCAA Championships automatic qualifying time as well.
The Nike Cup Championships will conclude on Saturday with preliminaries starting at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.
