Georgia Aquatic Teams Prevail Over Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the University of Georgia on Wednesday at Koury Natatorium in the season opener for both teams.
On the men's side, freshman Evan Reed made his debut as a Tar Heel by winning the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Individual wins also came from junior Jeff James in the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Tyler Harris in the 400-yard individual medley and junior David Solarz on the three-meter diving board.
Freshman Laura Moriarty was a double event winner on the women's side, taking the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard individual medley. Fellow freshman Enuf Swanson won the 200-yard butterfly in a clocking of 2:01 flat.
Evan Reed and freshman teammate Wil Singley grabbed the top two places in the 200-yard freestyle. Reed won in 1:39.80 and Singley finished a close second in 1:39.84.
Megan Steeves was out touched by Georgia's Alex Putra in the 100-yard backstroke. Putra won in 55.13, compared to Steeves' time of 55.18.
Freshman Layne Brodie moved into seventh place on UNC's Women's All-Time Top 10 list in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.74.
Vinny Pryor finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.65. Teammate Flynn Jones set a career best in the100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.34, demolishing his previous best of 58.36. Chandler Thomas also set a career best time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.31, besting his previous best of 59.56.
Sophomore Tyler Harris placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with an impressive 1:48.98, just over his career best at last year's NCAAs of 1:47.35.
Redshirt freshman David MacDonald moved into eighth place on UNC's All-Time Top 10 depth chart on the one-meter board with 293.29 points.
Evan Reed won his second event of the afternoon by taking first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.53. In the men's 200-yard backstroke, junior captain Jeff James won in 1:48.53.
The Tar Heels grabbed the top two spots in the women's 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Laura Moriarty won in 2:15.63, just 21 hundredths off her best time of 2:15.42. Her time puts her fifth on the UNC All-Time Top 10 depth chart. Junior captain Alison Clemens placed second in 2:16.44.
Tyler Harris swam a career best in the 200-yard breaststroke with a second-place time of 2:00.76, besting his previous mark of 2:01.87. Flynn Jones swam his second career best of the day in the 200-breastroke with a 2:07.73, eclipsing his best of 2:08.21 from the Virginia dual meet last season.
The Tar Heel men dominated on the three-meter diving board placing 1-2-3 against the Bulldogs. Junior David Solarz won the event with 311.47 points followed in second and third place by David MacDonald and Alex Kenley. MacDonald's score of 310.20 puts him sixth on Carolina's All-Time Top 10 depth chart.
Freshman diver Kristin Arnold placed second on the one-meter board with a score of 248.70, putting her seventh on the All-Time Top 10 depth chart.
Laura Moriarty captured her second win of the meet in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:20.45, an NCAA B qualifying time.
Defending ACC champion Tyler Harris cruised to a victory in the 400-yard individual medley in 3:52.67, besting the remainder of the field by nearly five seconds.
The Carolina men's relay team of Steve Cebertowicz, Jeff James, Wil Singley, and Brock Park won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:03.62, edging out Georgia's `A' team by seven hundredths of a second. The Tar Heels missed tying the meet by just .14 of a second when Georgia's top relay out touched UNC's "B" relay squad.
The Tar Heels will face South Carolina on Friday Oct. 17 in Columbia, S.C. at 5 p.m.
