CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - No. 14-ranked Virginia rallied in the second half of the meet Saturday afternoon to defeat No. 9 North Carolina 162-138 in men's swimming and diving action at the University of Virginia Aquatics Center.
The loss was the first of the 2010-11 dual meet season for Carolina which is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC with meets remaining against NC State and Duke.
"We swam a great Virginia team today in a great rivalry match. It was a meet where we ran out of people. Credit to Virginia for putting together a good lineup. We had our opportunities but fell short. We plan on using today's meet to help us for the rest of the season," said Head Coach Rich DeSelm.
"We had a nice medley relay to get a win at the start. Joe Kinderwater had a great swim in the 1000. A few of our stalwarts were a little off today. The last few events we couldn't quite match them. It was a good learning experience for us," said DeSelm.
UNC got off to an early lead by winning five of the first six events of the meet, gaining a 22-point advantage. Defending ACC champion Virginia then began to flex its muscle as it ran off seven victories in a row to pull away for the victory. Carolina rallied with wins in three-meter diving and the 200 IM but the Cavaliers still had enough points to clinch the win prior to the 400-yard freestyle relay where the Wahoos also took first place.
Carolina won seven events overall, including one relay. Different competitors claimed all six individual event wins for Carolina. UNC's 200-yard medley relay team turned in a season best at 1:29.59 with Josh Hafkin, Vinny Pryor, Tommy Wyher and Steve Cebertowicz comprising the relay.
Individual winners for UNC were Joe Kinderwater in the 1000-yard freestyle at 9:00.12, Tommy Wyher in the 100-yard backstroke at 48.36, Vinny Pryor in the 100-yard breaststroke at 55.46, Tom Luchsinger in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:48.16, David MacDonald in three-meter diving with 368.18 points and Tyler Harris in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:49.01.
UNC will return to action Thursday when the Tar Heels compete against NC State at 5 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
