Men's tennis player Trystan Meniane, a senior from Martinique, France, won all three singles matches last week to a 2-1 mark and near upset of No. 9 Duke. Meniane beat Duke's Michael Yani, No. 34 in the nation, 7-6, 6-3 Wednesday as the No. 45 Tar Heels almost ended Duke's 57 match ACC winning streak,falling only 4-3. Meniane then led UNC to a pair of shutout wins over Maryland 6-0 and NC State 7-0 with wins over Pierre Rudder of the Terrapins 6-0, 6-3 and R.J. Murray of the Wolfpack 6-2, 6-4. Meniane finished the regular season 22-10 in singles and 6-2 in ACC dual matches. Both ACC losses were to nationally-ranked players in straight sets.
Senior Blair Woodward (Scotch Plains, N.J.) won the long jump and finished second the in triple jump at the Charlotte Invitational with a pair of NCAA regional qualifying marks. His mark of 24-8 1/2 in the long jump was his best this season.
Junior Anissa Gainey (Clayton, N.C.) won the women's 400-meter dash with an NCAA regional standard time of 53.80.
Senior centerfielder Tiffany Tolleson helped the Tar Heels earn their first Atlantic Coast Conference softball sweep with 10-2 and 3-2 wins over Virginia. Tolleson went 4-for-7 in the ACC doubleheader. She led off game one with a triple and set the tone ending the game 2-for-3, with a walk, two runs scored and a triple. In the nightcap, the Winter Haven, Fla., native finished 2-for-4, with a stolen base and one run scored. Tolleson ended the weekend hitting .571, with one stolen base and three runs scored.
UNC rowing's novice four and novice eight both won their petite finals at the Knecht Cup, held Saturday and Sunday in Cherry Hill, N.J. The novice four finished seventh overall in a field of 41 and the novice eight finished seventh in a field of 38. The Carolina novice four was made up of: Katie Sorensen (coxswain), Amanda Snow, Allison Standard, Stephanie Hoffmann and Dana Merritt The Carolina novice eight was made up of: Lauren Portnow (coxswain), Sarah Stargel, Kristin McPhillips, Emily Dondero, Susan Fisk, Laura Haythorn, Claire Bramble, Jenny Cox and Clara Leigh.
Men's golfer Richard Treis fired the low round of his collegiate career at last weekend?s The Intercollegiate, firing a six-under-par 65 in Saturday?s second round. Treis, a junior from Baden-Baden, Germany, tallied a third-place finish in the 54-hole event, finishing with a four-under 209 total after rounds of 71-65-73. In his second round when he shot 65, Treis was three-under on both the front and back sides with a round that featured seven birdies and just one bogey.
eth Ames, a women's lacrosse attackman, had four goals in Carolina's 12-11 win over vanderbilt. Ames is a native of Liverpool, N.Y.
