Carolina Men's Swimming Finish In Second Place After Day Two Of ACC Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men¹s swimming and diving team finished day two of the 2010 ACC Championships in second place with a score of 221 points behind defending champion Virginia who leads with 266 points. The Tar Heels had an outstanding second day to the meet, finishing with 62 points more than they had last year at this point when UNC was in fourth place with 159 points.
"Tonight we had some big winners in the B and C finals and that's what you want to do," said head coach Rich DeSelm. "Tyler Harris swam his second best time ever in the 200 IM and we had a fantastic 200-yard freestyle relay which the guys were very excited about."
The Tar Heels started out Thursday night's finals with four swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle championship heat. Junior Chip Peterson was seeded second after prelims, junior Joe Kinderwater was in sixth, senior Hank Browning was in seventh and sophomore Wil Singley was in eighth.
In the championship final, Peterson finished in fourth place with a time of 4:20.23. Kinderwater touched in sixth with a time of 4:24.01, Singley in seventh with a time of 4:24.17, and Browning in eighth with a time of 4:26.98. Senior Jason McLaughlin competed in the consolation final of the 500-freestyle for the Tar Heels and finished in 15th place with a time of 4:28.64. All five Tar Heels achieved NCAA "B" qualifying times in this event.
Junior Tyler Harris was seeded second going into the championship final of the 200-yard individual medley after going 1:45.35, the second fastest time of his career, in the morning session. Harris finished the championship final of the IM in second place in a time of 1:45.58, a NCAA "B" qualifying time.
Freshman Tom Luchsinger was seeded 10th going into the consolation heat of the 200-yard IM after going a career best time in the morning at 1:47.84. Luchsinger touched in ninth place in a time of 1:47.30, a NCAA "B" qualifying time. Juniors Flynn Jones, Vinny Pryor and Andy Brake swam in the bonus exhibition heat of the 200 IM. Pryor finished with a time of 1:49.04, a NCAA "B" qualifying time. Brake followed Pryor by touching in a time of 1:51.05 and then Jones who finished at 1:51.20. Jones swam a career best time in the prelims by going 1:51.02.
Sophomore Steve Cebertowicz represented the Tar Heels in the championship final of the 50-yard freestyle. After going 20.10 in prelims, Cebertowicz finished in sixth place in a time of 20.06, a career best time and NCAA "B" qualifying time. Cebertowicz also tied the UNC school record, becoming the third swimmer in Tar Heel history to go a 20.06, joining Kevin Erndl and Tod Schroeder in that elite company.
Senior Jeff James competed in the consolation heat of the 50-freestyle and finished in a time of 20.56, a career best time, while touching in 14th place. Sophomore Brad Hamilton and junior Josh Hafkin swam in the bonus exhibition heat of the 50 free. Hamilton finished with a time of 20.59 and Hafkin went 20.65, a career best time.
Freshman Ryland Jones finished in sixth place on the one-meter board for the Tar Heel divers with a score of 349.05. Freshman Jake Kinzbach took an 11th-place finish in one-meter diving with a score of 320.30.
UNC was seeded sixth going into the 200-yard freestyle relay which consisted of Steve Cebertowicz, Tommy Wyher, Jeff James and Brad Hamilton. Cebertowicz led off in a time of 20.13, followed by Wyher in a time of 19,41, then James who touched in 19.81 and anchoring was Hamilton in a time of 20.00. The Tar Heels came in second in a time of 1:19.35.
"Tomorrow and Saturday we will need some more passion, desire and togetherness," said DeSelm. "But we are in a good spot and we are going after it."
Prelims will begin Friday morning at 11 a.m. and will include the 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard breaststroke.
