CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 11th-ranked women and 12th-ranked men from the University of North Carolina swimming and diving program returned to Koury Natatorium for the first time since December, earning wins over both Clemson and Kentucky in a double dual meet.
The Tar Heel men improved to 6-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in the ACC while the UNC women are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
The Carolina women won all but two events in the 16-event program while the Tar Heel men won 13 of 16 events on their side of the ledger. UNC's men beat the Tigers 173-121 and downed the Wildcats 182-111 in the team scoring. Clemson won its head-to-head encounter with Kentucky 174-121.
On the women's side, UNC beat Kentucky 167.5-121.5 and Clemson 184-109. Kentucky earned the head-to-head win against Clemson 188-111.
The Tar Heels were come off a nine-day training trip to the Florida Gulf Coast returning home Wednesday after swimming a non-scored meet Tuesday against Penn State. "Obviously it was good to win. It was great to be at home coming off being in Florida where we had some great weather and great training for about eight or nine days," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.
"It's good to see everyone race again. We raced earlier in the week against Penn State but today we were a little more focused and showed a little more intensity in terms of people putting up some really concerted swims. I thought it was a good day all around. We had a lot of first places."
Individually the Tar Heel women had several multi-event individual winners led by junior Laura Moriarty who swept the breaststrokes and the 200 IM and senior Rebecca Kane who won all three sprint free events. Double winners for the women were Katura Harvey in the distance freestyles and Carly Smith in the 200 fly and 200 back.
The men were led by senior Tyler Harris' three wins in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 IM. Redshirt junior David MacDonald swept the diving events for UNC while junior Steve Cebertowicz won the 100 free and swam on both winning Tar Heel relay entries.
The Carolina women have a two-week break from competition before swimming at Virginia in dual meet action on January 22. The men will also compete at Virginia that day.
The Carolina men will be in action next Friday and Saturday however at the Classic at SMU at historic Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, Texas. Eight UNC swimmers and one diver will compete against a field which includes SMU, UNC, Purdue, USC, Michigan and Florida.
"I think we're in a very good spot. The trip was very successful in terms of team building. We had good health, good weather and good training and we're really excited about what's coming up," said DeSelm.
