CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams split dual meets Saturday with NC State at Koury Natatorium as the 16th-ranked UNC women triumphed 178.5-119.5 while the #13 Tar Heel men dropped a close decision to the #23 Wolfpack 151.5-145.5.
NC State's men have won nine straight dual meets and improved to 9-1 on the season and 6-1 I the ACC. The UNC men fell for the first time this year in dual meet action, concluding its dual meet season 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the ACC. The Carolina women improved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference while the NC State women are now 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the ACC.
"We set up the Duke and NC State meets on a Friday night and Saturday morning to try to simulate the multi-session nature of the championship meet. So by design we wanted our team to be challenged in terms of the schedule," sadi UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.
"Congratulations to NC State on their men's victory. We suspected it would be a very close meet. They had a very effective lineup and they were able to get enough people in the right positions to come out with a nice victory. A loss like this burns today and might burn tomorrow. But we need to move on with our sights focused on championship season."
UNC trailed the entire meet as NC State won the first five events. The Tar Heels rallied with two individual wins each by seniors Steve Cebertowicz and David MacDonald but State's victory in the final relay lifted it to victory.
"We had some bright spots but when the opponent wins both relays it makes it a bit more of a challenge in a tightly-contested meet," said DeSelm. "Some seniors did very well today. Steve Cebertowicz and Evan Reed in the sprints, David MacDonald on the boards, Jim Flannery in the backstroke to name a few. Whether we win or lose it's a shared experience. Now the team needs to pull together to decide what we're going to do a month from now. I think we'll be really good in a month."
NC State won both relays on the women's side and swept the diving and sprint events. But led by three wins by Katie Nolan and two by freshman Kelsey Cummings, the Tar Heels had enough top line talent and depth to pull out a comfortable margin of victory. Altogether, UNC won 10 of the 16 events on the day.
"On the women's side it's nice to get two wins on the weekend. We're coming off some injuries and getting some people healthier. It's nice to see a lot of our women fine tuning their events for the championship season," said DeSelm. "While NC State won both relays we were deeper across the board. It was a solid win top to bottom for our women's team.
"We had a lot of seniors on both teams swim their final dual meets. I know I speak for the coaching staff in appreciating what they've done so far. It was good to celebrate with them and their families today."
Saturday marked the final home dual meets for a large contingent of Tar Heel seniors. The women's seniors included Kristin Arnold, Candace Cooper, Katie Keel, Sarah List, Jenna Moore, Laura Moriarty, Laura Murphy, Marie Pesacreta, Laura Ruscoe, Nuffy Swanson and Sarah Tanner. On the men's side, the senior class incouded Steve Cebertowicz, Jim Flannery, Brad Hamilton, Sean Lane, Victor Leclere, David MacDonald, Jesse Mendes, Mike Mohr, Brock Park, Evan Reed and Wil Singley
It was NC State's first win over Carolina in men's swimming and diving since February 4, 2000 when NC State beat Carolina 123.5-119.5 at Koury Natatorium.
