CHAPEL HILL, NC - After a tough week of training in Sarasota, Fla., the Tar Heel swimmers and divers were back in Chapel Hill Saturday morning to take on the Clemson Tigers. The Tar Heel men continued their undefeated season making their record 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. The women improved their record to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in the conference.
"We are very thrilled to get a win coming off of tough Christmas training. We were interested to see what people could do considering most of the team was pretty beat up after last week's training," said head coach Rich DeSelm. "Both teams pushed through and proved that we are a strong and deep team ready to race."
oth the women and men got off to a quick start going 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay. For the UNC men, their first place time of 1:31.01 was a season best time.
The Tar Heel swimming teams showcased Carolina's depth in the distance freestyle events. Junior Ashley Miller touched first in the 1650-yard freestyle going a career best time of 16:40.88 which is a NCAA `B' qualifying time. Her teammates Katura Harvey, Katelyn Martin and Jackie Rudolph followed behind Miller in second, third and fourth, respectively. Freshman Jackie Rudolph also went a career best time of 17:10.00.
Miller, Harvey and Martin finished 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle as well.
The Tar Heel men's distance swimmers finished strong in the 1650-yard freestyle going 1-2-3. UNC was led by Senior Chip Peterson followed in second by Junior Joe Kinderwater and in third Sophomore Sean Lane.
The Tar Heel women had the top four finishes in the 100-yard backstroke led by Senior Megan Steeves. Junior Tommy Wyher who placed first in the event led the way for the men.
Sophomore Layne Brodie and Senior Alison Clemens led the Tar Heel breaststrokers with 1-2 finishes in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes, respectively.
On the men's side, in the 100-yard breaststroke, Vinny Pryor took first and was a tenth off his season best time going 56.50. In second was Flynn Jones, followed in third by Tyler Smith.
The 200-yard butterfly was another strong event for the Tar Heel women. Freshman Carly Smith led the pack with a first place finishing time of 2:01.18. Laura Moriarty and Nuffy Swanson finished in second and third, respectively.
The men went 1-2-3-4 in the 200 butterfly led by Senior Jason McLaughlin with a time of 1:49.77 which is just off his season best.
"We've been in Sarasota the past week training. It was a very hard week, but we pushed through as a team. I think today a lot of people were tired, but with the win we proved that we are a tough team," said Jason McLaughlin. "In the next two weeks, while we prepare for Virginia, it will be important to stay focused. We are excited for the Virginia meet, but we have to make sure we are ready to race."
The women's 100-yard freestyle was a close race between Tar Heels Megan Steeves and Rebecca Kane. Steeves got her hand on the wall first and won her second event of the morning in a time of 51.18. Steeves also placed first in the 100-yard backstroke earlier in the meet.
Sprinter Steve Cerbertowicz dominated both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle with first place finishes in both.
Carly Smith was another double event winner for the Tar Heels. Smith placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a season best time of 1:58.28, which is a NCAA B qualifying time. Fellow Freshman Rebecca Brooks came in second with her season best time of 2:02.67.
"It's been awhile since I have competed due to a small tendinitis injury. I felt a little rusty in warm-ups, but after my two races this morning I am reassured that I can race and am excited about the next couple of weeks leading up to ACCs," said Carly Smith.
The UNC women dominated the 100-yard fly with the three fastest swims by the Tar Heel women. The men had a 1-2 finish in the event with Tommy Wyher in first and Robert Grimmet-Norris in second.
The Tar Heel divers excelled on the boards as well. Sophomore Jenna Moore placed first on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Moore's 1-meter score of 292.72 was her season best. Teammate Freshman Chay Malvasio placed second on 1-meter.
On the men's side, Freshman Ryland Jones captured a first place finish on both boards. Jake Kinzbach took second on 1-meter and third on 3-meter. Teammate Austin Bradyhouse took third on 1-meter and second on 3-meter.
