Both men and women posted sterling performances, sweeping all 32 events including exhibitions, and showcasing considerable depth with a bevy of second-place finishes.
For the women, Stephanie Peacock led the way in the season opener with a trio of first-place finishes, swimming to wins in the 500 free, 200 IM and anchoring a first-place 400 free relay.
Senior Rebecca Kane also swam her way to two individual victories and two relay wins, while sophomore Carly Smith posted two individual wins to go with a first-place relay finish. Senior Katura Harvey, junior Layne Brodie, and sophomore Katie Nolan also notched an individual and relay top finish.
Kane took home a first-place finish in the 50 free while Brodie eked out a close victory in the 100 breast. Nolan then placed first in the 100 butterfly, while all three swimmers along with Smith combined to take the 400 medley relay win.
On the men's side, seniors Tyler Harris and Tommy Wyher spearheaded the Carolina effort, notching two individual event wins apiece. Harris claimed first in the 200 free and 200 IM while Wyher, in addition to two relay wins, swam to top finishes in 100 fly and 100 free, posting a 44.62 time in the 100 free good for tenth-place tie in UNC history on the top performers list.
It was also a big night in the deep end for junior David MacDonald, as the Darien, Conn. native swept the one- and three-meter diving events for the Tar Heels.
